Two adults and their five young children escaped a fire in their Hawke's Bay home last night.
Sergeant Brian Peard, of Napier, said the fire started in a bedroom of the Dockery Ave, Onekawa home at about 6pm.
The parents and their five children, aged 2 - 7, all made it out safely.
The house was extensively damaged and would likely have to be demolished.
The family had working smoke alarms, though it was not known what alerted them to the fire.
They had insurance but lost a lot of possessions, he said.
The cause of the fire should be determined this morning.
