How to Improve Your Public Speaking Skills | Business News

Public speaking, especially in front of large or imposing audiences, is one of the greatest limiting factors in an employee?s success. It does not matter how articulate you are while drawing conclusions and writing reports, if you cannot effectively communicate those ideas you will go unrecognised and unrewarded. Finding the right words, and even the bravery to speak up, however, is not so easy. These are four ways to turn your shaking squeak into a confident speech.

Take a Class

The easiest and most time-efficient strategy for improving public speaking skills is to benefit from the wisdom and critiques of a professional. Many community centres, private instructors and community colleges offer communications courses specifically geared toward public speaking. This gives you the opportunity to develop your technique and practise comfortably with a group of peers, rather than suddenly being forced into the spotlight in a working situation. Even better, you?ll receive valuable feedback to catch the mistakes you may not have noticed.

Plan Ahead of Time

Very few people are eloquent while making off-the-cuff remarks. Finding the right words and putting your thoughts together at the same time is almost impossible if you don?t have an innate talent for it, so always come to meetings and presentations prepared to answer any questions. That means familiarising yourself with all of the relevant details, to the point that you can address any concerns off the top of your head. Dressing well will also boost your self-confidence and make you appear more professional to your listeners.

Learn Relaxation Exercises

Often, when an individual knows what he or she needs to say and has all the facts, nerves decide whether or not the speech is successful. Anxiety can make you forget everything you prepared and leave your sentences punctuated with ?likes? and ?um?s. In the worst case scenario, some people even pass out. If your hands begin to shake and your stomach aches before public speaking, practise some relaxation exercises such as deep breathing and meditation before taking the stage. Even something as simple as reading a book can provide a useful distraction.

Practise

Most importantly, nothing will improve your public speaking like practise. Rehearse in front of a mirror in the days prior to a big speech, or enlist the help of friends and family to act as an audience and ask you questions. The more time you spend speaking to others, the less awkward it will feel. Find an excuse to talk to strangers, volunteer to make a presentation and don?t let yourself fall to the wayside. Very few people enjoy public speaking, but they recognise effort when they see it.

As your career develops, you can choose to better yourself, or you can choose to constantly avoid public speaking and be passed over for a lack of leadership. You may never be a great orator, but you don?t need to be. With the right perspective and a little homework, your speeches can convey all of the relevant information without any embarrassing moments, and that?s all most clients or employers will ever need from you.

New York's post-Sandy divide: Those with power and those without

Andrew Burton / Getty Images

Superstorm Sandy made landfall Monday evening on a destructive and deadly path across the Northeast.

By Emily Flitter, Reuters

NEW YORK -- Sandy split New York City in two.?

The massive storm left people damp, miserable and in the dark in the lower part of the city. Yet in much of the rest of Manhattan, life was almost normal, albeit without some of the usual urban comforts.?

Almost every street below Times Square in the city's Midtown district lost power on Monday night after an explosion at a Consolidated Edison power station, and it may not return for up to four days. A number of these areas had already been hit by flood waters.?

As a result, residents in Lower Manhattan emerged from their homes in search of the necessities of life on Tuesday. Ariel Ramos, 33, waited in the doorway of the Loisada Deli for ice to keep food in his refrigerator from spoiling. "What else you got?" he shouted into the darkened store. "Talk to me. I need stuff!" The clerk said he had no more bread, but he did have eggs. Ramos asked for eggs and a pack of cigarettes. "We have no electricity, no heat and no water," he said.?

Further north, restaurants and bars were open for business. With schools and the mass transit system closed, families strolled around taking pictures of felled trees. Burgers and Cupcakes on 35th Street and 9th Avenue was busy. A small crowd grabbed 99-cent slices of pizza on 41st Street, and a bakery called the Little Pie Company had a line 13 people long.

As the worst of the storm hit New York City late on Monday, water poured through streets and into buildings on Manhattan's southern tip, swamping parked cars and cascading through subway stations and tunnels. That was when the power transfer station on 14th street exploded and plunged the lower half of the island into darkness.?

Daylight on Tuesday coaxed residents, many of whom were spending a second day away from work, from their homes. Some were jogging or strolling with their dogs, picking their way over downed branches. Young people with cameras took pictures of flooded stores downtown. But for others, sightseeing was the last thing on their mind.?

Raymond Torres, who spent the night in his apartment in the Baruch Houses complex, located near the Williamsburg Bridge on Manhattan's Lower East Side, looked hopelessly at his soggy Honda, its interior full of leaves left behind when the water receded. His daughter, Diana, stood ready to take him to her apartment in the Bronx, where there was still power.?

Playground
For some, the FDR Drive, which runs along Manhattan's east side and which is normally jam-packed with traffic, was a giant park as they strolled among the downed trees and other detritus of the flood. The highway was closed to traffic in both directions, except for emergency vehicles.?

Chinatown, where the narrow streets are usually crowded with people and rich with smells of fish and spices, was mostly closed, its jumble of neon signs darkened.?

The boundary of the power outage, which varied from east to west, was noticeable not only by its working traffic lights but also by the sudden presence of cooking smells from buildings that still had power. The streets in Midtown Manhattan were drier compared with those farther south.?

In Herald Square, at 34th Street and 6th Avenue, a family from France stood in drizzling rain, trying to decide what to do for the day. The museums they wanted to visit were closed.?

Florence Buin, visiting from Rennes with her husband and two children, said the family stayed in their Times Square hotel, expecting to have to weather a severe onslaught from the storm, but what they experienced was very mild.?

"We were quite surprised," she said. "We were waiting all day long and we saw nothing."?

The Broadway musical for which they had tickets on Sunday night was canceled and so was their train trip to Washington on Monday. "In France we say 'a lot of noise for nothing,'" Buin said.?

Gouging
The Upper West Side, a wealthy enclave of Manhattan, did not lose power and only New York's mass transit standstill was keeping people home. Several grocery stores, restaurants and bars were open. Some people were taking pictures of each other in front of a car hit by a fallen tree.?

Further south, in front of the Archstone apartment building on 40th Street and 2nd Avenue, a group of 20-somethings with coffee in their hands sat in front of the building charging their iPhones. They said they lived just one block south on 39th Street, where power had been cut off.?

Lee Fleischer, a professor at Brooklyn College who lives in the Murray Hill neighborhood of Manhattan, was canvassing the streets trying to find D batteries for his flashlight. The price of two batteries, which normally cost around $5, had been jacked up to as much as $15 in the few neighborhood bodegas that were open despite the loss of power. "They can get away with this very easily," he said. "They are exploiting their customers and the community, though."?

At La Delice Pastry Shop, in nearby Kips Bay, the price for a cup of coffee had been raised from $1 to $3. A store clerk said the reason was that they had to use bottled water to make the coffee.?

In Manhattan's Lower East Side, Thea Lucas, 87, who lives alone, said she had come down from her apartment to warm herself up with a walk and to feed seven cats in her street she feels responsible for. "Cats are survivors. They all waited for me at the usual spot even though I came out much later today than I usually do."?

"I'm lucky to have gas; I can make hot water. But there is no heating and I'm all cold inside." She said the night was difficult without electricity. "There is nothing to do at home. You cannot read with a flash light, I used to do that but I'm not 20 anymore."?

Oil slicks
Across the Brooklyn Bridge, it was a similar story, with low-lying areas still struggling on Tuesday while on the higher ground life was getting back to normal.?

Brooklyn's Gowanus canal, which was a pale green color on Monday, had turned black. Receding waters had left oil slicks on the streets and sidewalks. Wood and other debris marked the high water mark, more than a block away from the canal.?

A brick house located just west of the canal on Carroll Street had steam rising from its foundation. A man who said he was a resident but wouldn't provide his name said the basement had filled with water from the canal in the night, and now the electrical wiring was steaming. He said the fire department told him it would not come unless the structure was physically on fire. "I'll wait, and then it'll go up like a tinderbox," he said.?

The Brooklyn Navy Yard, which now houses small businesses as well as a dock, was covered in about a foot of water. At the peak of the storm, it was 5 feet high. "There were 17 of us trying to pump out the docks when the pump room flooded," said Nigel Friday, 36.

The pump room is on three levels about 50 feet underground and workers were on all three levels trying to keep the water from hitting electrical components with sandbags, Friday said. "Then water started gushing in through the entrance we took to enter the pump room," he said. "That's when we had to drop everything and run out the other way. It was like a movie."?

Higher up, Park Slope, a section of Brooklyn popular with young families, was largely saved from harm. A few branches had fallen on the street, and some store front awnings had been stripped off by heavy winds, but that was about the worst of it.?

People were strolling about, bars and restaurants were open, albeit with limited menus. Thistle Hill Tavern on 15th street in Brooklyn, was offering "Frankenstorm" drink specials.?

Nearby, in Brooklyn's Prospect Park, massive felled oak, maple and sycamore trees lay across walking and bicycle paths. A police vehicle driving the park's interior road announced over a loud speaker that the park was closed, yet area residents poured in. Children climbed on downed trees, and runners weaved through the many strollers and dog walkers.?

Superstorm Sandy slams into New Jersey coastline

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) ? Superstorm Sandy slammed into the New Jersey coastline with 80 mph winds and hurled a record-breaking 13-foot surge of seawater at New York City on Monday, roaring ashore after washing away part of the Atlantic City boardwalk and putting the presidential campaign on hold.

Just before its center reached land, the storm was stripped of hurricane status, but the distinction was purely technical, based on its shape and internal temperature. It still packed hurricane-force wind, and forecasters were careful to say it remained every bit as dangerous to the 50 million people in its path.

The National Hurricane Center announced at 8 p.m. that Sandy had come ashore about five miles from Atlantic City. The sea surged a record of nearly 13 feet at the Battery, at the foot of Manhattan.

In an attempt to lessen damage from the storm, New York City's main utility cut power to about 6,500 customers in lower Manhattan, which includes Wall Street. Authorities worried that seawater would seep into the subway and cripple it, along with the electrical and communications systems vital to the nation's financial center.

As it closed in, Sandy knocked out power to more than 1.5 million people and smacked the boarded-up big cities of the Northeast corridor ? Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Boston, with stinging rain and gusts of more than 85 mph.

At least four deaths were blamed on the storm in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and New York. Among them were two people killed by falling trees.

As Sandy made its way toward land, it converged with a cold-weather system out of the west that turned into a fearsome superstorm, a monstrous hybrid consisting not only of rain and high wind but of snow. Forecasters warned of 20-foot waves bashing into the Chicago lakefront and up to 3 feet of snow in West Virginia.

Airlines canceled more than 12,000 flights, disrupting the plans of travelers all over the world, and storm damage was projected at $10 billion to $20 billion, meaning it could prove to be one of the costliest natural disasters in U.S. history.

President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney canceled their campaign appearances at the very height of the race, with just over a week to go before Election Day. The president pledged the government's help and made a direct plea from the White House to those in the storm's path.

"When they tell you to evacuate, you need to evacuate," he said. "Don't delay, don't pause, don't question the instructions that are being given, because this is a powerful storm."

Sandy, which killed 69 people in the Caribbean before making its way up the Atlantic, began to hook left at midday toward the New Jersey coast.

The storm lost its status as hurricane because it no longer had a warm core center nor the convection ? the upward air movement in the eye ? that traditional hurricanes have, but it was still as dangerous as it was when it was considered a hurricane, according to National Hurricane Center spokesman Dennis Feltgen.

Pete Wilson, who owns an antiques shop in Cape May, N.J., at the state's southern tip and directly in Sandy's path, said the water was 6 inches above the bottom edge of the door. He had already taken a truckload of antiques out but was certain he would take a big hit.

"My jewelry cases are going to be toast," he said. "I am not too happy. I am just going to have to wait, and hopefully clean up."

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said people were stranded in Atlantic City, which sits on a barrier island and was mostly under water late Monday. He accused the mayor of allowing them to stay there.

With the hurricane fast approaching, Christie warned it was no longer safe for rescuers, and advised people who didn't evacuate the barrier islands to "hunker down" until morning.

"I hope, I pray, that there won't be any loss of life because of it," he said.

While the hurricane's winds registered as only a Category 1 on a scale of five, it packed "astoundingly low" barometric pressure, giving it terrific energy to push water inland, said Kerry Emanuel, a professor of meteorology at MIT.

"We are looking at the highest storm surges ever recorded" in the Northeast, said Jeff Masters, meteorology director for Weather Underground, a private forecasting service. "The energy of the storm surge is off the charts, basically."

In New York City, authorities worried that salt water would seep through the boarded-up street grates and through the sandbags placed at subway entrances, damaging the electrical connections needed to operate the subway.

Hours before landfall, there was graphic evidence of the storm's power.

A construction crane atop a luxury high-rise in New York City collapsed in the wind and dangled precariously 74 floors above the street. Forecasters said the wind at the top the building may have been close to 95 mph.

Off North Carolina, a replica of the 18th-century sailing ship HMS Bounty that was built for the 1962 Marlon Brando movie "Mutiny on the Bounty" went down in the storm, and 14 crew members were rescued by helicopter from rubber lifeboats bobbing in 18-foot seas. Another crew member was found hours later but was unresponsive. The captain was missing.

At Cape May, water sloshed over the seawall, and it punched through dunes in other seaside communities. Sandy also tore away an old section of Atlantic City's historic boardwalk.

"When I think about how much water is already in the streets, and how much more is going to come with high tide tonight, this is going to be devastating," said Bob McDevitt, president of the main Atlantic City casino workers union. "I think this is going to be a really bad situation tonight."

In Maryland, at least 100 feet of a fishing pier at the beach resort of Ocean City was destroyed, and Gov. Martin O'Malley said there would be devastating flooding from the swollen Chesapeake Bay.

"There will be people who die and are killed in this storm," he said.

At least half a million people had been ordered to evacuate, including 375,000 from low-lying parts of New York City, and by the afternoon authorities were warning that it could be too late for people who had not left already.

Millions of people stayed home from work. Sheila Gladden evacuated her home in Philadelphia's flood-prone Eastwick neighborhood, which took on 5? feet of water during Hurricane Floyd in 1999, and headed for a hotel.

"I'm not going through this again," she said.

Those who stayed behind had few ways to get out. New York's subways, which serve 5 million people a day, were shut down. The Holland Tunnel connecting New York to New Jersey was closed, as was a tunnel between Brooklyn and Manhattan, and the city planned to shut down the Brooklyn Bridge, the George Washington, the Verrazano-Narrows and several other spans because of high winds.

Stock and bond markets were closed Monday and Tuesday, the first shutdown since the days after the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001 and the first two-day closing of the stock market because of weather since a blizzard in 1888. The New York Stock Exchange is inside the mandatory evacuation zone in lower Manhattan, blocks from New York Harbor.

If the storm reaches the higher estimate of $20 billion in damage, that would put it ahead of Hurricane Irene, which raked the Northeast in August 2011 and caused $16 billion in damage. Hurricane Katrina, which killed 1,200 people, cost $108 billion.

Two adults and their five young children escaped a fire in their Hawke's Bay home last night.

Sergeant Brian Peard, of Napier, said the fire started in a bedroom of the Dockery Ave, Onekawa home at about 6pm.

The parents and their five children, aged 2 - 7, all made it out safely.

The house was extensively damaged and would likely have to be demolished.

The family had working smoke alarms, though it was not known what alerted them to the fire.

They had insurance but lost a lot of possessions, he said.

The cause of the fire should be determined this morning.

Raining Cats And Blogs: What Exactly Is A Short Sale Listing?

During your search for foreclosure listings, you may have heard the term ?short sale". A short sale transaction is an alternative to foreclosure without many of the same damaging affects. A short sale is an agreement in which your mortgage lender agrees to accept a payoff on the loan for less than the balance. Many lenders agree to a short sale because they receive more of the loan balance in comparison to the amount they would gain from selling the property following a foreclosure.

The benefit of a short sale is that it aids in maintaining home values in the community the property is located. A short sale is also not a typical real estate transaction and includes more than the usual players. Most real estate transactions involve the home seller and their real estate agent, the buyer and their lender, and their real estate agent. In a short sale situation, all of those parties in addition to the seller's loan servicer, any junior lien holders, mortgage investors and/or insurers may be involved too.

If you would like to know more about short sales and how to buy a bank-owned or real estate owned property, please feel free to call us or contact us at www.SheilaNewtonTeam.com! Crew of tall ship off NC abandons ship in storm

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) ? Donning survival suits and boarding life boats, the crew of a tall ship in distress off North Carolina's Outer Banks abandoned the vessel as Hurricane Sandy swirled toward the East Coast, the Coast Guard said early Monday.

The 17 people aboard the HMS Bounty got into two 25-foot lifeboats with canopies, wearing survival suits and life jackets, Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class David Weydert in Portsmouth, Va., said.

The Coast Guard was trying to determine whether to use cutters or helicopters to rescue the crew, based on the current ocean conditions, Weydert said. Winds of 40 mph and 18-foot seas were reported at the ship, about 90 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C.

The Coast Guard initially received a call from the owner of the 180-foot, three mast tall ship, HMS Bounty, late Sunday evening, saying she had lost communication with the vessel's crew.

The Coast Guard in Portsmouth later received a signal from the emergency position indicating radio beacon of the Bounty, confirming the position.

An air crew from Elizabeth City, N.C., sent an HC-130 Hercules aircraft that established communications with the Bounty's crew.

The vessel was taking on water and had no propulsion.

The ship is a replica of the one made famous in the 1960 MGM film "Mutiny on the Bounty" and it was used in that film, which starred Marlin Brando. The ship was also used in the film "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest."

Giants beat Tigers in 10 innings for Series sweep

DETROIT (AP) -- Marco Scutaro singled home the tiebreaking run in the 10th inning, and the San Francisco Giants beat the Detroit Tigers 4-3 on Sunday night to complete a four-game sweep and win their second World Series title in three years.

Ryan Theriot, who went hitless for St. Louis in Game 7 of last year's Series, singled softly into right field off Phil Coke opening the 10th.

Brandon Crawford sacrificed, nearly bunting the ball past Coke. Angel Pagan struck out and Scutaro singled into short center field as Theriot slid home ahead of Austin Jackson's throw.

Pablo Sandoval, who hit three homers in Game 1, was selected Series MVP. He was 1 for 5 in Game 4, dropping his Series average to .500 (8 for 16).

Santiago Casilla got the final out of the ninth for the win, and Sergio Romo struck out the side in the 10th for his third save, freezing Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera with a called third strike to end it. The Giants ran out of the dugout and bullpen to celebrate between the mound and second base.

Of the 24 teams to take 3-0 Series leads, 21 swept and three won in five games.

Delmon Young hit a tying home run off Matt Cain in the sixth. Cabrera and San Francisco's Buster Posey homered, marking the first time both reigning batting champions went deep in the same Series game.

San Francisco's Brandon Belt hit an RBI triple off the right-field wall in the second inning following a ground-rule double by Hunter Pence. But on a night when the wind was gusting to right field at up to 25 mph, Cabrera put Detroit ahead for the first time in the Series with a wild-blown, two-run drive in the third.

Cabrera's drive, on an 86 mph breaking ball, sailed over Pence, who thought he would catch it but ran out of room in front of the right-field wall on the cool, blustery night. It drove Jackson, who had walked with one out, and ended Detroit's 20-inning scoreless streak.

San Francisco had not trailed since losing Game 4 of the NL championship series, when the Giants fell into a 3-1 series deficit against St. Louis.

With a light rain falling, Scutaro reached on a chopper to third leading off the sixth and, one out later, Max Scherzer hung an 82 mph breaking ball. Posey drove it down the left-field line, where it stayed a few feet fair and landed a couple of rows over the wall for a 3-2 lead.

That advantage didn't last long. Young sent an opposite-field, no-doubt drive into the right-field stands in the bottom half, setting off cheers among the crowd of 42,152, with many fans waving white rally towels.

Andy Dirks followed with a single and Jhonny Peralta hit a drive that Gregor Blanco caught against the wall in left.

After watching Barry Zito, Madison Bumgarner and Ryan Vogelsong each allow one run or none in the first three games, Cain gave up three runs and five hits in seven innings with five strikeouts and two walks.

Scherzer, pitching on nine days' rest, gave up three runs and seven hits in 6 1-3 innings, struck out eight and walked none. After he left with a runner on second and one out in the seventh, lefty Drew Smyly retired Brandon Crawford on a flyout and righty Octavio Dotel induced a groundout from Angel Pagan.

Smyly, Dotel and Coke combined for 2 2-3 innings of hitless relief before the 10th.

Jeremy Affeldt followed Cain and struck out four in a row before Peralta hit a ninth-inning drive to center that the wind carried and was caught by Pagan on the warning track

Casilla relieved and hit Omar Infante with a pitch, breaking his left hand. Danny Worth ran for Infante and Gerald Laird hit into a forceout.

Sandoval was 1 for 5, dropping his Series average to .500 (8 for 16). He also made a nimble play to throw out Quintin Berry on a bunt to third.

Detroit's Prince Fielder was hitless in four at-bats, dropping to 1 for 14 in the World Series (.071) and 1 for 25 (.040) against right-handers in the postseason.

Detroit has lost seven straight postseason games.

On a 44-degree night, fans bundled up at Comerica Park and some players wore caps with earflaps during batting practice.

Detroit scratched catcher Alex Avila, playing with a sore right arm since he was hit by a foul tip in the opener, and replaced him with Laird. Infante moved up to eighth in the batting order.

Jobs data, election may overshadow earnings

By Ryan Vlastelica, Reuters

NEW YORK ? Earnings season may be only half over, but the focus on profits should subside next week as investors turn their attention to the coming election and Friday's jobs report, the last major data release before the Nov. 6 contest.

More bellwether companies are scheduled to report results in what will be another "peak week" of the earnings season. Such a flurry of numbers normally holds Wall Street's attention and can lead to market swings. But volume and volatility may be slight next week, with market participants opting to remain on the sidelines ahead of the jobs data and the election.

The U.S. government's October jobs report will give a snapshot of the current labor market. It could also give a bit of a lift to President Barack Obama, should it come out better than anticipated, or help Republican candidate Mitt Romney ? if it is worse than forecast.

Polls currently indicate that President Obama is a slight favorite to win on Nov. 6, but the race will be tight. The most recent Reuters/Ipsos poll of likely voters shows the president ahead ? 47 percent to 46 percent.

The Standard & Poor's 500 Index fell 1.5 percent this week, largely because of a spate of earnings disappointments. The Dow Jones industrial average slid 1.8 percent this week, and the Nasdaq composite index dropped 0.6 percent.

What's notable, however, is that rebounds have been brief and quick to attract sellers.

Eyes on the election
Some investors cited the approaching election as a barrier to committing new capital to the market.

"Not many people have the stomach to plop down their bets when polling is so close," said Hayes Miller, the Boston-based head of asset allocation in North America at Baring Asset Management. "For the most part, investors will wait and see what happens."

Miller, who helps oversee more than $50 billion in assets, said the trend of caution would be especially pronounced in the health care, financial and energy sectors ??three areas that may face different regulatory outlooks, depending on the election's outcome.

"These are the ones really in play," he said.

Expectations for the next nonfarm payrolls report, set for release on Friday, are by no means certain, either. Analysts expect 124,000 jobs were added in October ? up 10,000 from September. However, the unemployment rate is also seen ticking higher ? to 7.9 percent from 7.8 percent.

A payroll surprise in either direction could further cloud expectations for the election's outcome.

"A big change in payrolls could cause some uncertainty over the winner," said Jerry Harris, president of asset management at Sterne Agee, in Birmingham, Ala. "I don't expect a big surprise, but while the S&P doesn't seem especially vulnerable at these levels, I don't think it is in a hurry to go up, either."

The market will also have to contend with the weather. Hurricane Sandy is expected to hit the U.S. East Coast early in the week. New York City officials were considering closing down bus and subway lines next week.

At the New York Stock Exchange, the plans call for business as usual. The exchange issued a statement on Friday saying it has contingency plans to have the market running, adding that it has back-up power generation facilities. The Big Board will make accommodations for critical staff and traders.

Rival marketplace NASDAQ OMX said in a statement that it has plans to make sure its systems are ready. It will communicate with its members before, up to and after the storm.

Disappointing earnings
While the market at large may be waiting on news events, individual stocks could still be volatile as earnings season grinds along. More than half of the S&P 500 components have reported results so far. Next week, though, will bring reports from some marquee names such as Dow components Chevron and Pfizer, as well as S&P 500 stalwarts Visa, Ford Motor and Starbucks.

This earnings season, a number of high-profile companies have missed estimates, including this week's sour notes from Apple, United Technologies and DuPont.

With 54 percent of the S&P 500 companies having reported results so far, 62.5 percent have topped earnings expectations, under the 67 percent average over the past four quarters. Just 37 percent have topped revenue forecasts, well under the 55 percent over the past four quarters.

The earnings disappointments led to some intensive selling, driving the Dow industrials down 243.36 points on Tuesday alone.

The S&P 500 has ended down in five of the past seven trading sessions. Those declines have pushed the benchmark S&P under its 50-day moving average of around 1,434, leading some analysts to believe it may be ready for a bounce.

"We'll use any pullback as an opportunity to buy," said Chip Cobb, senior vice president at Bryn Mawr Trust Asset Management in Bryn Mawr, Pa. "Even though we've seen a number of companies miss expectations and be overly cautious, we're focusing on how a majority have beaten."

Cobb said next week he was especially looking to results from U.S. Steel. Its stock is down almost 20 percent so far this year.

"Steel companies have been participating really poorly, and I'm anxious to see if that will continue," he said.

Mother of slain diplomat Sean Smith deeply ... - Riehl World View

Socialize RWV:

It most certainly was?disrespectful?- and clumsy, especially given Obama?s allegedly great communication skills. But then, contrary to his rhetoric, Obama has never shown much empathy or compassion for others, truth be told. This guy is a bag of myths mixed in with some jelly donuts. Not that I have anything against jelly donuts, at all.

The mother of an American diplomat killed during a terrorist raid on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi has hit out at Barack Obama for describing the attack as ?not optimal?, saying: ?My son is not very optimal ? he is also very dead.?

During an interview shown on Comedy Central, Obama responded to a question about his administration?s confused communication after the assault by saying: ?If four Americans get killed, it?s not optimal.?

Speaking exclusively to MailOnline today, Pat Smith, whose son Sean died in the raid, said: ?It was a disrespectful thing to say and I don?t think it?s right.

Building a better business starts with understanding strategy ...

Two best-selling authors and consultants told Charlotte-area business owners and executives their game plan for entrepreneurial success at a day-long event Thursday.

The event was hosted by Vistage, a company specializing in peer advisory groups with about 16,000 members worldwide. About 120 local business leaders attended.

Speakers Keith McFarland and Jaynie Smith decried conventional business strategies for growth and marketing.

McFarland, author of ?The Breakthrough Company: How Everyday Companies Achieve Extraordinary Results,? encouraged business leaders to include even entry-level workers in decision-making and reevaluate company strategy every 90 days.

He also criticized ?kumbaya? team-building exercises, such as ropes courses, as a waste of time.

The best way to build a team, McFarland said, is to develop a ?strategy everybody understands, believes in and feels a part of.?

McFarland?s book ? the culmination of a five-year study of more than 7,000 companies ? profiled nine ?breakthrough? companies, including SAS Institute of Research Triangle Park.

Smith is author of ?Creating Competitive Advantage: Give Customers a Reason to Choose You Over Your Competitors.? She has consulted for mid-sized businesses and Fortune 500 executives and says 95 percent of businesses don?t maximize their ?competitive advantage.?

She said nearly all companies laud their good customer service, reputation and expertise, without giving the specifics that set them apart. Few companies dig deeper and offer concrete examples of why they?re different or better than the competition.

For example, many lenders tout their communication. But a lender optimizing its competitive advantage would use statistics ? such as ?95.8 percent of 504 calls last year were responded in 24 hours.? She also encouraged business leaders to spend the money to hire outside groups for research, rather than relying on customer surveys. Double-blind studies offer feedback that?s more objective and useful, she said.

4 Essential Tips when Diagnosed with Mesothelioma ...

When first diagnosed, many ask ?What is Mesothelioma???? It is a rare and aggressive cancer that is caused by prior exposure to asbestos.? It?s hard enough to be diagnosed with cancer, but when diagnosed with mesothelioma, it?s even harder to find support, specialists, and information on treatments.? ??Perhaps the most important first step is to find doctors who specialize in mesothelioma and asbestos related diseases as they will be much more equipped to help you quickly and accurately.? And with mesothelioma, time is of the essence.

Most patients diagnosed with mesothelioma were exposed to asbestos through their workplace although not always.? About 2500-3000 Americans every year develop mesothelioma, and most of those don?t live a year from time of diagnosis.? Unlike with more common types of cancer, many lay people as well as doctors do not have experience with mesothelioma.? This makes it even more imperative to follow these four suggestions if you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, often referred to as ?asbestos cancer.?

1.? Find a Mesothelioma Specialist

You can visit our Mesothelioma Doctor and Specialist section of our website to a doctor and treatment facility near you. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) also has a great fact sheet on ?How to Find a Doctor or Treatment Facility if You Have Cancer.?

2.? Consider Participating in a Clinical Trial

The National Cancer Institute not only can refer you to a mesothelioma doctor, but can also help you determine if there is a clinical trial you can participate in specifically for your type of mesothelioma. There are no guarantees with treatments offered through clinical trials, but current standard treatments for mesothelioma are often not effective, so considering an alternative is highly recommended.

3.? Hire an Attorney who Specializes in Mesothelioma Lawsuits

Your cancer was caused when you were exposed to asbestos, anywhere from ten to fifty years prior to developing symptoms of mesothelioma. Asbestos manufacturers are responsible for your illness because they knew it was dangerous and yet did nothing to protect, train or inform people until years later, and many have died a preventable death because of their negligence to warn. Hiring an attorney that specializes in mesothelioma can lead to substantial payments from the asbestos companies who were responsible for your exposure. These recoveries can help cover medical costs, travel for treatment, and provide financial security for you and your family. The best law firm to represent you in a mesothelioma lawsuit is one that specifically handles and has years of experience in representing clients diagnosed with asbestos related diseases. Choose wisely ? it makes a difference.

4.? Find Support

A diagnosis of mesothelioma is extremely challenging, both for the one diagnosed as well as for caretakers and love ones. While it?s not easy to find a support group for mesothelioma given how rare this type of cancer is, it?s still very important to find emotional, spiritual, and physical support. Whether it?s your local church group, extended family, professional counselors, in-home nurses, or Hospice, make sure you and your loved ones get the extra support needed.

It?s not easy to be diagnosed with a rare cancer like mesothelioma. We get that. We?ve been helping clients and their families for over 30 years. We can help you too. If you?d like to speak directly with one of our mesothelioma attorneys, call 1-800-440-4262 today for a no-cost consultation. Our website is full of resources and we also can send you a free brochure with the most important information you need to know. We wish you and your family well.

Selecting The Best Senior Care Choice For Your Family

Never offer medical services unless you are trained and licensed to do so. If you are very active you will need a higher amount of calories. Seniors in their 70?s and 80?s are at even higher risk than those in their 60?s-immunity declines with age. While no one looks forward to the idea of placing one?s parent in a retirement home, that is the reality for many. The calorific needs of any person will depend on their level of activity.

Once you?ve made your decision, hired a senior home care person, and started the service, you should make sure that every part of the relationship continues to maintain a high quality throughout the duration. Since in most cases, working people are unable to provide sufficient time, the option of senior services, home care work as a good alternative. With at home care, aging in place becomes a viable option for elderly people. Still, it?s important to consider senior home care, life line services or to rely on a friend or neighbor to check in regularly just in case something serious does happen and help is needed. I did all the usual web searches, then went to my local medical equipment supplier to narrow the choices.

Although nursing can be a rewarding job, but, like other jobs, it requires hard work, dedication, and patience. The aged and the elderly will require some kind of help in their daily lives mainly due to their aging bodies that may not allow them to carry out their daily activities in a timely manner. In a short time you will be busy building up your bank account. Most caregivers can work for him or herself all they have to do is set up a sole proprietary ship with an accountant or they can do it themselves at their local state agency. More than just a retired nurse coming over to check in on your parent from time to time, most services offer a wide range of care options.

The biggest expense you will have in this home business is transportation costs such as gas and car maintenance. The seniors and adult children should devise an emergency plan in case of disaster. In-home care business is booming, especially in Oregon, one of a handful of states setting the standard for adult care. Therefore, they seek an accurate solution for this important issue. If you are planning to provide the best care to your aging parents or relatives, then make sure that you approach a reputed elder care service provider.

A specialist can be hired to conduct a home analysis and help identify areas of the home that need some repairs. This emphasizes the need for the Fountain Valley clinics to step in and help the seniors in the society. If your parent?s ailment makes it unimaginable to take him or her to an elder treatment home, take into consideration the most reliable home health care NJ seniors can count on. Safety calls are aimed at those people who live alone and whose health places them at risk and, therefore, would benefit by being monitored on a daily basis. Access to services for older home care becomes an easy job, if you use the Internet.

Visit the website to get a much better idea of the place, and talk to the relevant personnel. The purpose of aged care homes will ensure that older adults have an active lifestyle. The higher rate of depression among elders in senior care facilities may be due to their lack of ability to deal with drastic changes in their environment and daily schedules. Home health care has the option of all levels of senior care and all while the senior lives at home. These foods will also differ in the level of satiety they provide.

With the increasing number of senior citizens living alone in their houses, their family may become concerned about their well-being. Elderly care services provide aging loved ones with meal preparation and diet monitoring services to ensure health and well being. For instance, if a member of the family has the flu, the spread of viruses and bacteria can be prevented by minimizing his interactions with other members of the family. Take out an advertisement in your hometown newspaper. This should be taken into account when you figure out what you should chance to offer the senior citizen helper services.

You must know how to administer medication, check medical records, and even bathe the patient and tend to their daily needs. You can ask a nutritionist or your doctor to help you figure this out. Nowadays, the demand for certified and licensed live in care aides have increased. Employees covered under the federal Family and Medical Leave Act may be able to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave per year to care for relatives. Make a personal visit to the place where your loved ones will be placed and check all the facilities there.

Elder care is an important concern for modern working professionals. Adult guardians are often required to file periodic written reports with a judge. Over the coming decades there are many careers in health care that will provide significant income opportunities for those interested in caring for the elderly. Families should make a plan and be prepared for an earthquake, hurricane, tidal wave, wildfire or other catastrophic event. Health care is much more advanced and specific such as acute care, chronic medical care, wellness exams and walk-in services.

It is also important to learn a thing or two about portion control. Your neighbors will soon know about your new service and some of them will be your customers.

GOP says it raised nearly $55M for convention

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The group that hosted the Republican National Convention says it raised $55.3 million for the GOP's festivities in Tampa, Fla.

Financial documents filed Wednesday show hundreds of individuals and corporations contributed to the August GOP convention.

High-dollar donations included $5 million from Las Vegas casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, who's poured tens of millions into the presidential race. More than $100,000 apiece in contributions came from household names like Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

The Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., reports raising $24 million ? falling short of its $36.7 million fundraising goal. It relied on at least $5 million in corporate donations despite pledges by party officials to raise cash only from individuals.

The party conventions raise money to pay for tony political shindigs beyond what taxpayer dollars fund.
