ADHD is over-diagnosed

Friday, March 30, 2012

What experts and the public have already long suspected is now supported by representative data collected by researchers at Ruhr-Universit?t Bochum (RUB) and University of Basel: ADHD, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is over-diagnosed. The study showed that child and adolescent psychotherapists and psychiatrists tend to give a diagnosis based on heuristics, unclear rules of thumb, rather than adhering to recognized diagnostic criteria. Boys in particular are substantially more often misdiagnosed compared to girls. These are the most important results of a study conducted by Prof. Dr. Silvia Schneider and Prof. Dr. J?rgen Margraf (both from RUB) and Dr. Katrin Bruchm?ller (University of Basel) as reported in the American periodical "Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology".

Leon has ADHD, Lea doesn't

The researchers surveyed altogether 1,000 child and adolescent psychotherapists and psychiatrists across Germany. 473 participated in the study. They received one of four available case vignettes, and were asked to give a diagnoses and a recommendation for therapy. In three out of the four case vignettes, the described symptoms and circumstances did not fulfil ADHD criteria. Only one of the cases fulfilled ADHD criteria based strictly on the valid diagnostic criteria. In addition, the gender of the child was included as a variable resulting in eight different case vignettes. As the result, when comparing two identical cases with a different gender, the difference was clear: Leon has ADHD, Lea doesn't.

Male and conspicuous: the "prototype" makes the difference

Many child and adolescent psychotherapists and psychiatrists seem to proceed heuristically and base their decisions on prototypical symptoms. The prototype is male and shows symptoms such as motoric restlessness, lack of concentration and impulsiveness. In connection with the gender of the patient, these symptoms lead to different diagnoses. A boy with such symptoms, even he does not fulfil the complete set of diagnostic criteria, will receive a diagnosis for ADHD, whereas a girl will not. Also the therapist's gender plays a role in the diagnostic: male therapists give substantially more frequently a diagnosis for ADHD than their female counterparts.

Diagnostic inflation, more medication, higher daily doses

In the past decades the diagnoses ADHD have become almost inflationary. Between 1989 and 2001, the number of diagnoses in German clinical practise increased by 381 percent. The costs for ADHD medication, such as for the performance-enhancer Methylphenidate, have grown 9 times between 1993 and 2003. The German health insurance company, Techniker, reports an increase of 30 percent in Methylphenidate prescriptions for its clients between the ages of 6 and 18. Similarly, the daily dosage has increased by 10 percent on average.

Remarkable lack of research

Considering these statistics, there is a remarkable lack of research in the diagnostic of ADHD. "In spite of the strong public interest, only very few empirical studies have addressed this issue", Prof. Schneider and Dr. Bruchm?ller point out. While in the 70s and 80s a "certain upswing" of studies on the frequency and reasons for misdiagnoses could be observed, current research hardly examines the phenomena. The current study shows that in order to avoid a misdiagnosis of ADHD and premature treatment, it is crucial for therapists not to rely on their intuition, instead to strictly adhere to defined, established diagnostic criteria. This is best possible with the help of standardized diagnostic instruments, such as diagnostic interviews.

Inviting God into your day

A Christian Science perspective.

By T. Jewell Collins / March 29, 2012

How many times do we vow to do better, to be kinder, to speak more gently ? even to be nicer to ourselves?

And then our resolve dissolves in the heat of the moment or we capitulate to the pressure that provides us with an excuse for our lapse.

I recall arising one morning and promising myself that today I was not going to raise my voice, be critical, or put myself down. As well intentioned as this declaration was, I realized that it lacked the divine impulsion that would ensure its success.

More was needed. I prayed to be receptive to God?s direction, knowing Him as ever available to help whenever called upon. This Bible verse came to thought, offering a model I could emulate: ?Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer? (Psalms 19:14). A peaceful calm replaced the self-determination I had been feeling.

That morning, with renewed inspiration, I approached two situations that had been troubling me. A travel plan that seemed stuck in an unacceptable pattern was resolved. With that encouraging sign, the solution to a computer problem that had baffled me for several months became evident. I viewed these small but gratifying resolutions as modest answers to my prayers.

With a greater daily awareness of God with us, we can view challenges as opportunities to acknowledge His active presence and its accompanying assurance that He ?pours the riches of His love into the understanding and affections, giving us strength according to our day? (Mary Baker Eddy, ?Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures? p. 5). We can gratefully accept every evidence of these ?riches of His love? as proof that He is causing and supporting our good intentions, setting them on a course guaranteed to be satisfying and fruitful.

Right intent directs our thoughts into selfless, productive channels. With God in our day, we are motivated not only to do the right thing, but to want to do it, sincerely and genuinely. His presence aligns our aims with their original purpose, to let His light shine through everything we say and do.

Insight: Spain's jobless immigrants take on banks over mortgages

MADRID (Reuters) - Every Tuesday evening dozens of homeowners who cannot pay their mortgages gather in a cramped community center near Madrid's main bullring to discuss strategy to fight their banks.

Newcomers, many of them immigrants from South America, take turns speaking about how close they are to eviction. They tell of losing their jobs, defaulting on their loans and receiving court notice saying they will be kicked out.

Veterans of the Platform of Mortgage Victims tell the new arrivals they will probably lose their homes but they also provide legal and psychological support to people willing to move out in exchange for the bank forgiving their loan.

Evictions, up to 200 a day, have become a symbol of Spain's 5-year economic crisis, started by a collapse in the housing and construction industry that put millions out of work.

But the Platform has managed to suspend or delay dozens of the procedures in the last six months by protesting outside foreclosed homes and helping people negotiate with their banks.

The highly public "Stop Evictions" campaign has fed a wave of defiance against banks and the new government has promised relief for borrowers who took loans during a long housing boom.

Many members of the Platform are Ecuadorians who moved to Spain during the late 1990s and early 2000s to work in the construction industry, unaware it was about to go bust.

When the day arrived for Patricia Tapia's eviction in February, she took her children to daycare and waited in her apartment for a court official. The 28-year-old Ecuadorian's unemployment benefits had run out and she stopped paying her mortgage four years ago.

Outside her brick apartment block in eastern Madrid, camera crews filmed about 100 protesters who faced down a riot squad and chanted slogans against banks for evicting jobless debtors.

When the court official and a bank representative arrived, Patricia, with the support of a volunteer psychologist, persuaded them to give her a 45-day reprieve she hopes will buy her enough time to benefit from new government rules.

EASY MONEY

A decade of low interest rates fueled Spain's housing bubble. After the market crashed in 2007-2008 hundreds of thousands found themselves owing more on their home than it was worth. At the same time, interest rates jumped and payments on floating-rate mortgages soared.

Evictions of those who cannot pay their mortgage almost doubled to some 50,000 last year in Spain, from 27,000 in 2008, as unemployment soared to 23 percent, according to the General Council of the Judicial Branch.

Low-income immigrants like Patricia were particularly hard-hit. When they lost their jobs they had no way to make payments on houses that were impossible to sell. Prices have been falling for four years with no end in sight.

They had no idea what they were getting into, said Rafael Mayoral, a lawyer who helps borrowers.

Mayoral says banks and mortgage brokers targeted the Ecuadorian community, which ballooned during the boom to become Spain's third biggest after Romanians and Moroccans at an estimated 400,000.

In the early 2000s it was easier for a poor immigrant to buy a house than to rent. Landlords in Spain typically ask for a 6-month or even 1-year rental deposit, whereas banks pitched home loans with no downpayment.

Many Ecuadorians also felt pressure because they had to demonstrate home ownership on immigration applications to bring their family from South America to join them in Spain.

Some brokers set up storefronts and painted themselves as non-profit groups aiding immigrants.

"The risk management was zero. They gave loans for everything," said Jose Antonio Garcia Rubio, economic secretary for the United Left, a minority political party that presented an initiative to Congress to change mortgage rules to push banks to rent homes back to jobless mortgage defaulters.

"It was way too easy.. It was a seduction, a persecution, a swindle," says Aminta Buena?o, Ecuador's ambassador to Spain, who has set up a free legal aid program for what she estimates are 15,000 Ecuadorian families in trouble with their banks.

Tapia said she and her ex-partner were making about 3,600 euros a month when they got a mortgage for 285,000 euros ($380,000). Then she lost her job with a courier service in 2008 and her ex-partner's gardening work evaporated. Her income plunged to 400 euros in unemployment benefits.

Her lender, Bankia, one of the Spanish financial institutions most burdened by bad property loans, took her to court and now owns the house.

The bank will struggle to unload it in a moribund real estate market and if it does not sell, Tapia will continue to owe the entire mortgage. If it sells at today's deeply discounted prices, Tapia will owe the difference.

"The house is theirs, I only hope they pardon the debt. It's a huge weight. Even if I could find a job they would get part of my paycheck," said Tapia.

A Bankia spokesman said it had not been involved in overly aggressive lending but acknowledged there had been a period of easy credit fueled by expectations the bonanza would continue.

A spokesman for Spain's Central Bank said the regulator had never seen the need to investigate whether banks had engaged in abusive lending. "What the Central Bank oversees is solvency of the banks," he said.

But when the dust settled from the property market crash the country's banks were left with tens of billions of euros of bad debt and worthless property, and five have had to be rescued by the government.

Mayoral, often working for free, has filed several fraud cases against brokers and banks. One lawsuit led to the arrest and indictment of a former mortgage broker.

Now a magistrate is investigating whether the broker illegally set up cross guarantees, in which two low-income immigrants purchased homes and each house was used as collateral for the other loan.

SHARED BLAME

Although there has not been a systematic probe of mortgage practices in Spain, public alarm over evictions prompted action by the new centre-right government.

Economy Minister Luis de Guindos recently asked banks to forgive mortgage debt for properties worth less than 200,000 euros and where all family members are unemployed.

Most Spanish banks have said they will respect the new code. Bankia and two other large banks, Santander and BBVA, said they have refinanced thousands of loans for families in difficulties, giving them time to repay the loans.

Consumer group ADICAE says de Guindos's measures do not go far enough and demand deep reform of mortgage laws.

But Carlos Ba?os, whose Association of Victims of Foreclosures (AFES) helps them negotiate with their banks, says a new law to allow people to hand in the keys to the bank with no penalties might set off a dangerous wave of defaults.

"The banks are largely to blame, but the home buyers know they share the blame too. I tell my clients learn your lessons, don't get over your head in debt. Everyone was buying a house, even people who shouldn't have," he said.

Banks' appetite for foreclosures may also be on the wane because lenders are overloaded with repossessed property on which they have had to recognize huge losses. Also, foreclosure proceedings are expensive, and the courts have huge backlogs.

GUARANTORS TRAPPED

Javier Chicaiza, 28, another Ecuadorian immigrant who is active with the Platform, said Bankia pardoned his 243,000-euro mortgage after his wife lost her job and he quit his to be able to negotiate with the bank.

But he is still in trouble because his brother's house is being foreclosed and he was a guarantor on the mortgage.

Members of the Platform gather once a week in the daytime for mass visits to bank branches to present applications to have their debt pardoned.

Isabel Lascano and 30 other members of the Platform met in Madrid's central Puerta del Sol square recently and went together to turn in papers at Bankia.

Lascano and her husband, are both unemployed and stopped paying their mortgage a year ago. Their house is now being foreclosed. She is desperate for Bankia to accept her petition and pardon her debt, because her cousins, who guaranteed her loan, now have a black mark on their credit rating and have had to cancel their credit cards.

Lascano would like to flee with her family to Ecuador, but doesn't want to leave her cousins in the lurch.

"It hurts me for them because they were the ones who helped me out and now they are paying the consequences."

Obama gets personal over killing of black Florida teenager

WASHINGTON/SANFORD, Florida (Reuters) - President Barack Obama weighed into the controversial killing of a black teenager in Florida in very personal terms on Friday, comparing the boy to a son he doesn't have and calling for American "soul searching" over how the incident occurred.

Seventeen-year-old Trayvon Martin, dressed in a "hoodie" hooded sweatshirt, was shot dead a month ago in Sanford, Florida by a 28-year-old white Hispanic neighborhood watch volunteer who said he was acting in self-defense.

"If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon," Obama said in his first comments about the shooting, acknowledging the racial element in the case.

"Obviously, this is a tragedy," Obama told reporters. "I can only imagine what these parents are going through.?And when I think about this boy, I think about my own kids."

The case has galvanized the nation and prompted rallies protesting the failure of police to arrest the shooter, George Zimmerman, and more broadly, a pattern of racial discrimination that black leaders cite in Sanford and elsewhere in the country.

Obama, the first black U.S. president, made his remarks at a White House event to announce his pick to lead the World Bank, waiting briefly after the announcement to take a reporter's question about the incident.

Martin's parents thanked the president for his words.

"The president's personal comments touched us deeply and made us wonder: If his son looked like Trayvon and wore a hoodie, would he be suspicious too?" they said in a statement.

Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law allows people to use deadly force in self-defense.

Similar laws are in effect in at least 24 states including Florida, according to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. Calls are mounting to repeal them. Earlier this week, a Florida state senator said he was drafting new legislation to drastically change the law in Florida.

A South Carolina state representative said on Friday he had introduced a bill to repeal his state's law.

RACIAL DIVIDES

Bakari Sellers, a black Democrat and gun owner, said he wanted to prevent an incident like the Trayvon Martin shooting happening in his state. "I'm six-five and a black guy," he said. "I just know that it could have been me."

Obama said the "Stand Your Ground" laws should be studied.

"I think all of us have to do some soul-searching to figure out how does something like this happen.?And that means that we examine the laws and the context for what happened, as well as the specifics of the incident," he said.

"Every parent in America should be able to understand why it is absolutely imperative that we investigate every aspect of this, and that everybody pulls together - federal, state and local - to figure out exactly how this tragedy happened."

Obama, the son of a white mother from Kansas and black father from Kenya, does not comment frequently on race, a sensitive topic in the United States, which still grapples with a legacy of slavery, segregation and discrimination.

Early in his White House tenure, Obama inflamed another racially tinged incident by declaring police had "acted stupidly" when arresting a well-known black documentary filmmaker, Henry Louis Gates, after an altercation at his home.

Obama later invited Gates and the white police officer, Sergeant James Crowley, to the White House, where the men shared a drink in what became known as the "beer summit."

In Sanford, Norton Bonaparte Jr., the city's manager, acknowledged tensions between the black community and police "go back many, many years." "The trust that existed is gone, so we have to start from ground zero," he said. Sanford's police chief and a Florida state prosecutor overseeing the case stepped aside on Thursday as criticism grew over police handling of the investigation.

The state's new special prosecutor, Angela Corey, arrived in Sanford after Gov. Rick Scott appointed her on Thursday night.

"We appreciate that an investigation was already done. We are going to review what was done. We are going to continue to investigate and then we'll proceed from there," Bernie de la Rionda, an assistant state attorney with Corey's team, told reporters outside the police department.

SUSPENSION, HISTORY

The U.S. Justice Department is also investigating. Senior officials from the department met with the Martin family in Florida on Thursday, along with their lawyer.

A Justice Department spokeswoman said early in the week that they must collect evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that there was or was not intent to violate civil rights laws.

And a Florida college announced it had suspended Zimmerman's enrollment.

Zimmerman was working toward an associates degree in arts at Seminole State College in Sanford. He previously earned a vocational certificate in an insurance field, the school said. "Due to the highly charged and high-profile controversy involving this student, Seminole State has taken the unusual but necessary step this week to withdraw Mr. Zimmerman from enrollment," a statement dated Thursday said.

Zimmerman has not commented publicly about the shooting and his whereabouts are unknown. His father has said he is being unfairly vilified.

On Friday, Florida court records reviewed by Reuters showed Zimmerman was involved in at least two previous legal incidents, including a 2005 domestic violence case with his former fiancee.

Zimmerman, who at the time worked at an insurance agency, and his ex-fiance both sought restraining orders against each other after getting into a pushing match. In her complaint, Veronica Zuazo said the two had been involved in two physical fights in 2002 and 2003.

Zimmerman was also arrested and charged with resisting a law enforcement officer with violence in 2005. The case was eventually dropped after he completed a program to avoid being formally charged.

Why In Home Care Makes Sense in the Twenty First Century

HTML Ready Article. Click on the "Copy" button to copy into your clipboard.

By: Peter Mangiola

These days, populations in western countries are aging like never before. With the Baby Boomers in America into full retirement, families need to consider carefully which senior care option is best for their aging loved one. A growing number of families are settling on in home care for their senior members. There are several reasons why this choice is becoming so popular.

First of all, most in home senior care agencies offer far greater flexibility than a nursing home or other kind of medical institution. An in home care agency can tailor a program to fit the needs of the individual, something that even the best run nursing homes simply cannot accomplish. For example, if you have an elder family member that only needs someone to check up on them once or twice a week, this can be arranged. However, if your loved one needs 'round the clock' assistance, this can be done as well. Whatever level of care is needed, an in home caregiver can provide it.

Along these same lines, in home care agencies usually offer month to month agreements, so you can cancel the services if you find that they are not a good match for your particular situation. This is a big benefit that stands in stark contrast to a nursing home. We all know that the majority of folks that move into a nursing home never come back out. There's a sense of 'finality' there, and it is very hard to reverse this decision once it's made. That is not the case if you choose in home elder care.

Another benefit of in home senior care over a nursing facility is the cost. The outrageous cost of nursing homes is legendary. There have been untold cases of people losing all their assets in order to pay for their nursing home care. In some states, once all the assets of the senior are gone, their family members end up burdened with the remaining costs. This need not be the case if families choose in home care. Depending on the level of care you need, hiring an in home caregiver may not be cheap, but the price is likely to be far less than a nursing home.

Perhaps the greatest benefit to in home care for a senior loved one is the difference in quality of life. Studies show that over 90% of seniors prefer to stay in their homes instead of moving to a medical facility. It's not hard to understand why. Nursing homes are scary. They are unfamiliar and there's no guarantee of what kind of treatment they will receive. Even in the best of circumstances, it can be a very depressing place for an elderly person to live. In home senior care, on the other hand, allows the senior to remain in the home they are familiar with and continue to live life as independently as possible. It's hard to put a price tag on the higher quality of life this option offers for those who choose it.

New Seahawks QB scores with bosses, fans; Mariners hope to score big in Japan

Seahawks fans like what they're hearing about new quarterback Matt Flynn. Team leaders touted his skills and leadership ability this week.

While the Seahawks welcome an important new player, a veteran player for the Mariners is preparing for a huge homecoming in Japan.?

KPLU sports commentator Art Thiel covers both topics this week.

The real deal

Art says Seahawks general manager John Schneider can't say enough good things about Matt Flynn. He says Flynn is the real deal - despite only having played in two games last season with Green Bay.

"They really do like Flynn's command of himself and of the game.? He's a very bright guy, a very able leader. His two starts were spectacular as the backup to Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay. On Jan. 1 against Detroit he threw for six touchdowns and 480 yards - setting Packer passing records. And that caught everybody's eye and made him the No. 2 free agent quarterback in the market behind Peyton Manning."

Open competition?

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said this week that there will be an open competition for the starting job between Flynn and Tavaris Jackson. Art says that's not the case.

"They have to say it, and we have to disbelieve it. It's a delicate situation. You don't want to foreclose on Jackson starting because what happens if Flynn falls down the stairs? Or fails to perform? They don't want to 'dis' the guy who could be a 16-game starter for them. But we see the reality of the contract: three years for $26 million - $10 million guaranteed. And Tavaris Jackson has one year left on a $4 million deal. So, that's the reality and it's Flynn's job to lose."

Mariners in Japan

The Mariners left for Japan Thursday. They will open their season against the Oakland Athletics in Tokyo on March 28 and 29. Art will be in Japan all next week as well.

He says this isn't the first time Major League Baseball has played games in Japan. But it's the first time the Mariners have.

"The Mariners have the closest relationship with Japan than any other Major League Baseball team. It's a big deal for them to connect with this fan base that's followed Ichiro. This is his first homecoming in a Mariner uniform. There's a lot of interest in him. He's still a rock star at age 38. He's still popular. And the Mariners really do want to connect with the Japanese fan base and celebrate Ichiro's 10-year career."

You can follow Art Thiel's dispatches from Japan at Sportspress Northwest and next week on KPLU.

Drowning, coke, heart disease killed Houston

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Whitney Houston was a chronic cocaine user who had the drug in her system when she drowned in a hotel bathtub, coroner's officials said Thursday after releasing autopsy findings that also noted heart disease contributed to her death.

The disclosure ended weeks of speculation about what killed the Grammy-winning singer on Feb. 11 on the eve of the Grammy Awards.

Houston was found submerged in the bathtub of her room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, and her death was ruled accidental. Several bottles of prescription medications were found in her hotel room, but coroner's officials said there weren't excessive quantities.

"We are saddened to learn of the toxicology results, although we are glad to now have closure," Patricia Houston, the singer's sister-in-law and manager, wrote in a statement to The Associated Press.

Beverly Hills police said in a statement there was no evidence of wrongdoing in connection with Houston's death.

Coroner's Chief of Operations Craig Harvey said cocaine and its byproducts were found in Houston's system, and the drug was listed as a contributing factor in her death. He said the results indicated Houston was a chronic cocaine user.

Toxicology results also showed Houston had marijuana, Xanax, the muscle relaxant Flexeril, and the allergy medication Benadryl in her system. Houston died just hours before she was scheduled to appear at producer Clive Davis' pre-Grammy Awards bash.

The singer also had buildup of plaque in her arteries that can restrict blood flow. Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said the condition is common in drug users, although he said it wasn't clear whether Houston had a heart attack on the day she died.

"It just beats up their heart and they will go to use and they will have a heart attack," he said.

The exact amount of cocaine in Houston's system was not disclosed Thursday but will be contained in a full autopsy report to be released in about two weeks, officials said.

Cocaine use has been known to cause damage to the heart and could have cause Houston's death, said Dr. Michael Fishbein, professor of pathology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He had no role in the investigation.

He said a likely scenario was that Houston's cocaine use interfered with the normal function of her heart.

"There's no reason to drown in a bathtub unless you're incapacitated," Fishbein said.

Family and friends said after Houston's death that they didn't believe she was still abusing drugs.

"I don't think drugs was an issue for her before her death. I don't know what happened that day," Patricia Houston said in a recent interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Houston, 48, was buried in a New Jersey cemetery next to her father after an emotional four-hour funeral service that was attended by friends, family and superstars such as Oprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry, Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson and Roberta Flack

Houston, a sensation from her first, eponymous album in 1985, was one of the world's best-selling artists from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s, turning out such hits as "I Wanna Dance With Somebody," ''How Will I Know," ''The Greatest Love of All" and "I Will Always Love You." But as she struggled with drugs, her majestic voice became raspy, and she couldn't hit the high notes.

Interest in her music skyrocketed after her death, pushing her songs back on to charts and into heavy rotation on the radio.

She influenced a generation of younger singers, from Christina Aguilera to Mariah Carey, but Houston's drug use derailed her career and took a heavy toll on her once pristine voice.

But by the end of her career, she was a stunning cautionary tale of the toll of drug use. Her album sales plummeted and the hits stopped coming. Her once serene image was shattered by a wild demeanor and bizarre public appearances. She confessed to abusing cocaine, marijuana and pills and was eventually unable to hit the high notes as she had during her prime.

"The biggest devil is me. I'm either my best friend or my worst enemy," Houston told ABC's Diane Sawyer in an infamous 2002 television interview with then-husband Bobby Brown by her side.

She had been attempting a comeback when she died. She had finished filming a remake of the movie "Sparkle" in which Houston sang the gospel hymn "His Eye is on the Sparrow." Producers of the film have said the singer was a complete professional on the set.

So how do I push the pulley in a little more? I noticed a nut in the middle of the thing, so do I just tighten it some more. Here?s a link to where the picture of it is post?d, noticed it?s sticking out. Please help.

If the crank pulley is sticking out that far, it?s either the wrong pulley or it?s installed incorrectly. Pull it and take a look.

Tips for Buying a Car at Car Auctions

Article by Melanie Cath

Summary: Used car auctions remain one of the most popular ways of buying a new car. But remember that you cannot take it for a test drive and there is mostly no warranty. In spite of this there are many bargains to be found.

There are many places where you can buy a used car from; a private seller, a used car dealer or at a car auction. And there are several different car auction places; government auctions, eBay Motor auctions and other auction sites.

When buying a used car at an auction there are several things you need to be aware of to ensure that you get what you need at a price you can afford. Firstly you need to work out exactly what you do need. It is easy to get carried away when you go to an auction and see the huge variety of cars available. Having a checklist of requirements will ensure that you actually buy the type of car you set out to buy.

So before you go list all the things you want in your car. You may want a station wagon or a Ute if you intend to carry a lot of equipment around. If you want to tow a van or boat, you?ll need a car capable of towing that load. Or you may want a small run-about to use as a second car. Whatever you want, you also want it to be in good condition with low mileage on the clock if possible.

You don?t want to pay a larger price than necessary for your car, but at a car auction you may get carried away by the excitement of bidding. If you are like this, then take someone with you who has a cool head ? and whom you will listen to when they tell you?ve reached your set limit.Mel writes about car auctions among other automotive related topics.
