French automaker Renault plans to begin building vehicles in China with Chinese partner Dongfeng, likely as early as 2014, the head of Renault and Japan's Nissan said Monday.
"It is gonna happen," Carlos Ghosn told reporters at the Detroit auto show, adding that the project start could occur between "2014 and 2016".
"Any project of Renault in China will take place with Dongfeng as a partner," he added.
"Renault sells cars in China but in limited number," said Ghosn, the chief executive of Renault and Nissan, Japan's second-biggest vehicle manufacturer after Toyota.
For Renault to play a bigger role in the world's largest vehicle market, it "needs to produce" there, he said.
Renault is one of the few major automakers that is not building vehicles in China. It sells only several thousand vehicles there, mostly 4x4 Koleos and a few Laguna and Megane cars.
Ghosn noted that Nissan, 44.3 per cent owned by Renault, is already producing cars there with Dongfeng.
"Every single car we're building in China is for the Chinese market," he said.
"We're still very bullish on China," he added.
Last year, Nissan unveiled a five-year 5.4 billion euros ($A6.75 billion) investment deal with its partner Dongfeng.
The two firms plan to launch 30 new models, including an all-electric vehicle. Nissan estimates it will double its production capacity in China to two million units by late 2015.
